People Inc. is teaming up with the Aquarium and other partners from Western New York and Rochester to promote accessibility among the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
Deaf Awareness Weekend at Aquarium of Niagara (Oct. 11-12)
People Inc. will provide the Aquarium with American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to interpret live programming and presentations throughout the weekend. Programming includes featured feedings and animal interactions.
New this year, the Aquarium will offer interpreted tours of the Aquarium at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. both days. (Advance registration is required.) They will also have representatives from RIT National Technical Institue for the Deaf on Saturday to share ASL signs for popular aquatic animals.
But the fun extends beyond the weekend! All October long, bring your Aquarium of Niagara receipt to Seneca Park Zoo for $2 off admission, or show your Zoo receipt at the Aquarium of Niagara for $5 off admission.

Deaf Culture Awareness Day at Seneca Park Zoo (Oct. 11)
There will also be a Deaf Culture Awareness event at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester. Partnering with the Rochester School for the Deaf and RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, there will be ASL interpreters on site to bring accessible programming to all. Programming will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will include signed and spoken story times, animal experiences, and more.
The Zoo’s Nature Cart will be out and about with members from the naturalist team working to educate guests on things like composting and garden maintenance in the fall/winter and a special skull, bugs and bones themed fact table. ASL interpreters will be available.
