Staying on Top of Medicaid Recertification

Dec 26, 2025

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who live with their family or caregiver, Medicaid recertification is a critical annual task, as eligibility for services is at stake.

For those who live in a group home, People Inc. will manage this process, but families are responsible for submitting and tracking recertification paperwork for those living with them. With current processing delays at Medicaid offices, staying organized and proactive is more important than ever.

Why this matters: If paperwork is delayed or incomplete, Medicaid coverage can temporarily lapse. While coverage is often reinstated retroactively, lapses can create stress, confusion and interruptions that everyone wants to avoid.

Tips to help you stay ahead:

  • Know your timeline: Recertification is annual. Watch for mail from Medicaid and mark deadlines as soon as you receive notice.
  • Start early: Due to staffing shortages and backlogs, processing is taking longer than it has in the past. Submitting paperwork early can help prevent gaps.
  • Gather documents in advance: Income information, household details and other required documents are often similar year to year. Keep copies in one place.
  • Confirm receipt: If possible, follow up with the Medicaid office to ensure your packet was received. Lost or unprocessed paperwork does happen.
  • Work with your Care Coordinator: Your Care Coordinator can help you understand requirements, track timelines and problem-solve if issues arise.

Delays are often outside a family’s control, but attention, early action and follow-up can make a meaningful difference.
