Managing Healthy Eating Habits During the Holiday Season

Nov 11, 2025

As the holidays come around, so will the delicious food. As we gather around the dinner table for pies, stuffing and more, it’s important for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their caregivers to remain mindful of healthy and safe eating practices this season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 6 people with disabilities in the United States have been diagnosed with diabetes. This is related to challenges that people with disabilities face, including a lack of healthy food choices, difficulty with chewing or swallowing certain foods, medications that lead to weight changes, physical limitations and more.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you gather to eat:

  • Add color to your plate. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, like apples, pumpkin, sweet potato and winter squash are festive and tasty ways to fill your plate this holiday season.
  • Balance is key. Don’t restrict yourself from an appetizing meal. Practice mindfulness when choosing a portion of your favorite food. Cut standard portions into halves or quarters before serving.
  • Be careful when chewing or swallowing. People with disabilities are at higher risk for choking, so limit distractions while eating. Consider adapting your menu if someone needs food or drinks modified to different size, texture or consistency. Provide condiments to moisten dry foods. Eat slowly and never eat while laying down.
  • Stay hydrated. Remember, the healthiest thing you can drink is water. Make it your go-to choice when you’re thirsty. Try to avoid drinks with excessive amounts of sugar.

Follow these tips and you’ll be sure to enjoy your holiday meals while keeping healthy eating on track!
