High School Students Grow Job Skills Through People Inc. Program

Aug 15, 2025

With their sights set on the future--Cameron Gibas aiming for a career in graphic design or landscaping and Thomas Casalinuovo working toward becoming an electrical engineer--these two friends are laying the groundwork for success before graduation.

Going into their senior year at Lockport High School, they are gaining valuable work experience at the historic Kenan Center in Lockport this summer. Working in the facility’s agricultural department, they’re helping to keep the grounds looking beautiful and green.

They are both part of People Inc.’s Steps to Work program, which opens doors for high school students while giving local businesses valued support. This unique opportunity helps individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) gain real-world experience, workplace confidence, and the soft skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. The program is funded through New York State Education Department’s ACCES-VR, which assists people with disabilities to achieve and maintain employment.

As part of this summer work program, they maintain the grounds at the Kenan Center, including making sure the grounds' statues are looking shiny and sleek.

Gibas and Casalinuovo perform a variety of tasks that require collaboration with their Kenan Center coworkers. Weeding, watering, and gardening are just some of the tasks they’ve been assigned this summer.  Recently, they received praise from coworkers and Kenan Center guests alike after they helped restore some of the unique statues on the grounds to keep them looking shiny and sleek.

“Working here has been great,” said Gibas. “I like the routine, I’ve learned a lot, and the people here are friendly. I could see myself doing a job like this after school.”

People Inc.’s Steps to Work program starts each spring with a 10-week workplace readiness class taught at their high school. Students learn soft skills and job skills, like how to apply for jobs, build a resume, prepare for interviews, and communicate professionally. Then, over the summer, students become paid employees of People Inc. and are placed at local businesses that match their locations and interests.

The pair work closely with Kenan Center Staff, including Office Manager Jack Masse (pictured center).

“Students gain independence, learn how to manage money, and often build connections that lead to permanent positions. Some employers have hired students beyond the summer because they see their potential and work ethic firsthand,” said Michele Marchewka, People Inc.’s vocational director.

For employers, the benefits are clear. Businesses get motivated, reliable young workers who bring fresh energy to the team. Since People Inc. covers wages and job coaching, companies can focus on mentoring the students and filling important seasonal roles. Job coaches work closely with both the student and the business, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone.

Steps to Work participants are making a big impact this summer on local companies like nursing homes, grocery stores, pizzerias, and car dealerships. At the Kenan Center, Gibas and Casalinuovo have made a particularly meaningful contribution.

“These guys do a wonderful job here,” said Jack Masse, office manager at the Kenan Center. “No matter what work they are assigned to do, they are always up to the task and do it with a wonderful attitude. We’re so glad they’re working with us this summer.”
