People Inc. Celebrates Newly Renovated Respite House

Jun 22, 2026

People Inc. celebrated the completion of a newly renovated overnight respite house during a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, marking a significant expansion of this important service for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.

The 12-bed Acacia Respite House will become the region’s only certified respite program for people with IDD that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The program replaces an existing 6-bed overnight respite and expands access to a service that remains in high demand, with a continuous waiting list.

The $775,000 project was made possible through significant support from the People Inc. Foundation, including a $500,000 commitment toward the renovation and expansion of the home. Support was also made possible through the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation Legacy Fund and the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

“The opening of Acacia Respite House reflects People Inc.’s ongoing commitment to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the families who care for them,” said Anne McCaffrey, President and CEO of People Inc. “This home represents relief, stability and opportunity for families who need trusted support, and we are proud to help meet that need in our community.”

Overnight respite provides temporary relief for caregivers while ensuring their loved ones receive safe, quality support in a welcoming residential setting. Access to overnight respite services has become increasingly limited throughout the region following the closure of several programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Overnight respite is one of the most difficult services for families to access consistently, yet it is one of the most important,” McCaffrey said. “For many caregivers, respite is not a luxury, it is essential. It helps prevent burnout, strengthens family caregiving arrangements and provides peace of mind knowing their loved one is receiving exceptional care.”

Joining McCaffrey at the ribbon cutting event were New York State Senator Jeremy Zellner, New York State Assemblymember Karen McMahon, Amherst Town Supervisor Shawn Lavin, People Inc. Foundation Board President William Regan, family members of people supported by People Inc., supporters and community partners.

“What stands here today is more than a beautifully renovated home. It is one of the region’s largest 24/7 respite resources that provides care, comfort, and peace of mind,” said Regan. “It means that families can rest knowing their loved ones are supported. It means caregivers can recharge. And it means our community is stronger because of it.”

Services will start at the Respite House at a date to be announced soon. People Inc. also offers afternoon, in-home, recreational and weekend respite throughout Western New York. Families interested in any People Inc. respite services should call 833.404.0032.
