People Inc. Breaks Ground on $900,000 Renovation of Neighborhood Gathering Space
Oct 16, 2026
People Inc., joined by Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan and members of the Oxford Square Block Club, today broke ground on a $900,000 renovation of the Oxford Square Community Lot. The project will transform the corner of Oxford and Lafayette avenues into an accessible outdoor gathering and recreation space for people of all ages.
The project is funded primarily through a Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) grant secured by Ryan while serving as a state senator, along with a $75,000 grant from the People Inc. Foundation.
The lot is located at the corner of Oxford and Lafayette avenues, adjacent to People Inc.’s Linwood Lafayette Senior Apartments at 637 Linwood Ave. in Buffalo. The redesigned space will feature an accessible playground, picnic areas, shade structures, seating and other amenities intended to foster community connection and outdoor recreation.
People Inc. has coordinated the project’s planning and implementation in partnership with the Oxford Square Block Club, building on years of neighborhood-led efforts to make the site a welcoming community resource.
“For nearly two decades, Oxford Square neighbors have poured their time, energy, and creativity into making this lot a gathering place for their community,” Mayor Ryan said. “As a state senator, I was proud to secure funding to build on that work with an accessible playground, more seating, and shade where Buffalonians of all ages can spend time together. It’s exciting to see construction getting under way, and I thank People Inc. and the Oxford Square Block Club for their partnership and commitment to this neighborhood.”
Pike Construction Services is leading construction, which is expected to be completed in spring 2027. The enhanced community space is anticipated to open shortly thereafter. MNLA developed the landscape design for the outdoor space.
“What we are celebrating is much more than the renovation of a small corner lot,” said Anne McCaffrey, President and CEO of People Inc. “The word ‘community’ in its name matters. The vision began with the resourceful people of this neighborhood, and their ideas and persistence helped shape a welcoming, accessible place where neighbors of all ages can gather, connect and enjoy the outdoors together.”
The funding from DASNY comes through its Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology Program.
