A Familiar Face Behind the Counter

Oct 19, 2026

Behind the deli counter at Wegmans, Brendan Curry carefully packages blocks of cheese and arranges them in the display case. He moves methodically through each task, washing his hands regularly, following safety procedures, and making sure products are neatly organized and ready for customers. The attention to detail is one of the many skills that has helped him build a successful career at Wegmans, where he has worked since 2017.

Curry works in the deli department

Curry works four days a week in the deli department, a role he earned after being promoted from Helping Hands, where he gathered carts in the parking lot and helped customers load groceries into their cars.

Through People Inc.’s Supported Employment program, Curry receives assistance that helps him continue building independence, workplace skills and to succeed in his career.

He says the opportunity to move into the deli allowed him to take on new responsibilities, including cleaning, greeting customers, taking orders and packaging deli meats. One of his favorite tasks is packaging pepperoni and organizing it for display. While he enjoys the work itself, what Curry values most is the people he meets each day.

“My favorite part of going to work is talking to people and helping them out,” Curry said.

Getting to work is another example of his independence. Curry takes the bus to and from his job, maintaining a consistent schedule and demonstrating a strong commitment to his role.

People Inc. Employment Specialist Teisha McElfresh works with Curry on communication skills and workplace safety while supporting his continued growth and confidence.

“He has a positive attitude and that goes a long way in the workplace,” McElfresh said. “He’s very flexible and open to trying new things. He learns quickly.”

Curry’s success also highlights how supported employment benefits employers. Through ongoing coaching and support, businesses gain reliable, dedicated employees who contribute to their teams and workplace culture. At Wegmans, coworkers say Curry has become a valued member of the deli department, where his strong work ethic and willingness to help others make a difference every day.

“Curry is a great employee to have,” said Sean Grotke, Deli Team Leader. “He’s hard working and likes to get things done.”

People Inc.’s Supported Employment program helps people with disabilities find and maintain meaningful employment in their communities. Through individualized job development, on-the-job coaching and ongoing support, the program creates opportunities for people to build independence while helping employers meet workforce needs and retain committed team members.

For Curry, success is measured not only by the work he does, but by the relationships he builds along the way. His nearly decade-long career at Wegmans demonstrates what is possible when a motivated employee and a supportive employer come together with the right resources for success.
