Deaf Awareness Month: What to Know
Oct 01, 2026
September is Deaf Awareness Month, an opportunity to celebrate Deaf culture, recognize American Sign Language (ASL) and learn how greater accessibility can help create more inclusive communities.
Is ASL the same as English?
No. American Sign Language is a unique, visual language with its own grammar, structure and vocabulary. For some people whose primary language is ASL, written English is their second language. That is one reason providing information in ASL can be so important.
What is the best way to communicate with a Deaf person?
There is no single answer. Some people use ASL, while others may communicate through spoken language, lip reading, writing, captioning or a combination. When in doubt, ask the person what works best for them.
What does an ASL interpreter do?
Qualified interpreters facilitate communication between people who use ASL and those who use spoken English. Interpreters can provide communication access during medical appointments, meetings, events, employment situations and other settings.
What is peer-to-peer support?
Peer support provides individualized assistance from someone who understands the communication and accessibility barriers Deaf people may encounter. That can include help understanding mail, navigating services, applying for benefits or looking for employment.
How can hearing people become better allies?
Learn about Deaf culture, make communication accessible and consider learning ASL. Most importantly, ask Deaf and hard-of-hearing people what form of communication works best for them rather than making assumptions.
Are there services for Deaf people in Buffalo?
Yes. People Inc.'s Deaf Access Services program serves Buffalo and communities throughout Western New York, providing resources to increase communication access, independence and opportunity. Services include qualified ASL interpreting, Video Remote Interpreting, Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART) and captioning. People Inc. also offers peer-to-peer support, community ASL classes and Deaf culture education. Its Career Pathways program helps Deaf and hard-of-hearing people explore careers, prepare for employment, find jobs and receive support to maintain employment.
Through these services, People Inc. works year-round to turn Deaf awareness into greater access, understanding and inclusion throughout the community.
