Breaking Down Misconceptions About Disability and Employment

Oct 19, 2026

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the valuable contributions people with disabilities make in the workplace and challenge common misconceptions about employment.

People have different abilities, interests, goals and support needs. For many people with disabilities, employment can provide opportunities to build skills, gain independence and contribute to their communities. The key is focusing on the person rather than making assumptions.

Misconception: People with disabilities can only perform certain types of jobs.

Reality: A disability does not determine a person's talents or career aspirations. People with disabilities work in a wide range of industries and roles. The best approach is to focus on each person's strengths, skills and interests.

Misconception: Hiring someone with a disability requires major workplace changes.

Reality: Employees with disabilities do not always require accommodations, and when accommodations are needed, they are often simple. Creating an inclusive workplace is less about making major changes and more about ensuring employees have what they need to succeed.

Misconception: Employees with disabilities always need ongoing assistance.

Reality: Support needs vary from person to person. Some employees may benefit from additional support during training, while others work independently from day one. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Misconception: Inclusive employment only benefits the employee.

Reality: Inclusive workplaces benefit everyone. Employers gain access to a broader pool of talent, diverse perspectives and dedicated employees, while communities become stronger when more people have opportunities to participate and contribute.
