People Inc. is proud to support this event.

Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY (DDAWNY) Family Committee of Family Advocates for individuals with Developmental Disabilities have organized a Flag Demonstration on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 12:00pm at Canalside at 44 Prime St. Buffalo, NY.

There are now 980 people living throughout our community with developmental disabilities who are registered with NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) seeking a suitable group home. Since 2008, NYS has stopped all construction of group homes, and have no plans to build more. We will be placing a flag for each of the 980 people currently waiting for a home.

“It is essential to address this looming crisis facing our most vulnerable citizens” states Barbara DeLong, Chair of DDAWNY Family Committee and event organizer. “We need the support of the entire community to be sure that every person with a disability has quality of life and choice in where they live, work and play. Every person deserves to be respected and valued” Mrs. DeLong adds, “it is our duty to make sure that they are supported and have the care they need.”

Members of the Western New York Legislature, who have been champions for people with developmental disabilities, will participate and be recognized at this event. Families and individuals waiting for homes will be in attendance and will share their stories.

Media is invited to attend. Interviews with families, legislators, DDAWNY agency executives, and members of the DDAWNY Family Committee can be arranged upon request.

This is the second of a series of flag demonstrations planned across New York State to raise awareness of the crisis facing our friends and neighbors.  On Saturday, May 18th, the first of this series of flag demonstrations was held in Rochester, NY in collaboration with Family Advocates United.
