People Inc. to Display Invacar at Eurocar/Motorcycle Day 2006
The Museum of DisABILITY Possesses the Only One Left in the U.S
BUFFALO, N.Y., June 8, 2006: The British Car Club and BMW Riders Club of WNY will be hosting Eurocar/Motorcycle day 2006 on Sunday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Rose Garden Restaurant Grove (behind the restaurant) in Williamsville. People Inc. is proud to have on display the Museum of disABILITY History’s Invacar at this show. The Museum is in possession of the only Invacar in the United States.
The Invacar Ltd (UK) was established in 1948 by Oscar Greeves after having built a three-wheeler for his paralyzed cousin, Derry Preston-Cobb. As a result of the many casualties from the Second World War, Greeves realized the need for such transport to be widely available. After contacting the government they agreed to pay for the vehicles to be made of which sold in great numbers. In 2003, the vehicle was taken off of the road. People Inc. acquired the car as an artifact to add to the museum collection as evidence of efforts made to remove a barrier to participation of the disabled throughout recent history.
In order to have the car ready for Sunday’s show, Radioactive Cycles in Tonawanda donated their time and mechanical work to the Invacar. “We are excited to have the Invacar even more so now that Radioactive Cycles has done such a wonderful job repairing it. There is so much to be learned from this piece of history,” remarked People Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Jams M. Boles, Ed, D. Radioactive Cycles is just as pleased to have had the opportunity to work on such an interesting automobile. “It’s a fun little car that gets everyone’s attention,” commented Anthony Santarosa of Radioactive Cycles who worked on the car. “The Invacar is great for the museum and is a great learning opportunity for the community.”
