People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY History featured at Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day

Conference targets the human service field

What:
The Museum of disABILITY History, a project of People Inc., will be featured at the Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day. The conference brings together more than 1,000 individuals with developmental disabilities, human service professionals, educators, students, and family members to explore issues in the field of developmental disabilities. The conference includes speakers, workshops, and live entertainment. The Museum of disABILITY History is one of the featured exhibits.

When:
Thursday, May 18, 2006; 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Where:
Buffalo Convention Center, Buffalo

Why:
The goal of the Museum of disABILITY History’s exhibit is to introduce its new website with virtual exhibits, which is scheduled to go live June 1. Attendees will have an opportunity to see a sneak peak of the website before it is launched. The website will include a wealth of information, time lines, images of materials, and objects in the Museum’s permanent collection, as well as extensive bibliographies for use by researchers. The new website was made possible through funding from the B. Thomas Golisano Foundation.

The Museum of disABILITY History, a project of People Inc., is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and display of artifacts relating to the history of people with disabilities. The mission is to tell the story of the lives, triumphs, and struggles of people with disabilities as well as society’s reactions. The Museum of disABILITY History is located at 1291 North Forest Rd. in Williamsville, online at www.museumofdisability.org, and traveling exhibits are also available.

People Inc. is a not for profit health and human service agency providing programs and services to more than 10,000 people with special needs, their families, and seniors throughout Western New York. Since 1971, People Inc. has assisted individuals to achieve greater degrees of independence and productivity.
