Congressman Thomas Reynolds will announce the recent HUD 202 awards for People Inc. to create Senior Housing complexes in Hamburg and Wheatfield. Current Senior Housing tenants will share their stories on what it means to live independently in affordable housing.
Why:
People Inc., Western New York's largest human service agency, was awarded $11 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build two affordable senior housing complexes. The complexes will be located on Sowles Road in the Town of Hamburg and on Townline Road in the Town of Wheatfield; both include 49 one-bedroom units, activity room, and caretaker’s apartment. Individual apartments include a kitchen, bedroom, living room with dining area, a private bathroom, and new appliances. Laundry facilities are also located at each site. Both locations were carefully chosen to ensure community integration for the residents and be developed to blend into the existing neighborhood. Abundant opportunities are provided for interaction within the community.
“This generous HUD grant allows our agency to create an independent living option for seniors in a vibrant community,” said People Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer James M. Boles, Ed.D. “These senior housing developments will help hundreds of seniors live happier, more secure lives.”
This will be the thirteenth and fourteenth low-income senior housing complexes owned and operated by People Inc. Apartment complexes are located in Amherst, Blasdell, Cheektowaga, Grand Island, Hamburg, North Buffalo, Orchard Park, and South Buffalo. Construction is underway for new complexes in Lackawanna and West Seneca.
People Inc. is a not-for-profit health and human service agency providing programs and services to at least 10,000 people with special needs, their families and seniors throughout Western New York. Since 1971, People Inc. has assisted individuals to achieve greater degrees of independence and productivity.
