The Elmwood Health Center introduced eleven Buffalo Public School students from East High School to a variety of health care careers in November through its partnership with the Erie Niagara-Area Health Education Center (EN-AHEC) program. EH-AHEC works with students interested in health care careers, with an overall goal to encourage, recruit, and retain health professionals to practice in underserved communities.
During their visit to the Elmwood Health Center, students rotated through observations in Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy as well as Medical and Mental Health/Social Work areas of the Elmwood Health Center. This was the first of four planned visits to the Elmwood Health Center by Buffalo Public School students for the 2006-2007 school year. The collaboration will continue throughout the school year with several follow up visits by the Elmwood Health Center staff to East High School, reinforcing what the students learned.
The students who are enrolled in the Bioinformatics program were introduced to some of the Health Information Technology currently being implemented by the Elmwood Health Center. These technologies include an electronic prescription program which allows a medical provider to write a prescription and send it directly to the patients pharmacy over the computer. In addition, students participated in a demonstration of a computerized system available through the Wheelchair Clinic, designed to measure pressure areas on the seat or back of a wheelchair to prevent the development of skin problems.
The Elmwood Health Center, located at 2128 Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo, provides Primary Care, Gynecology, Podiatry and Neurology medical services, as well as Rehabilitation and Mental Health services. Health services are available to the entire community and all major insurances are accepted. The Elmwood Health Center staff can be reached by calling 874.4500.
