New Senior Housing Director named
Mary Jo Giambelluca joined People Inc. as the senior services director. Mary Jo will oversee the agency’s eight affordable senior housing complexes located throughout Western New York as well as developing future senior housing projects and expansion of senior services.

Mary Jo came to People Inc. after 32 years at Catholic Charities. She was director of the Department of Services to the Aging for many years and most recently was director of Managed Care Services and Special Projects. She has a master's degree in social work from the University of Buffalo.

People Inc. Wins Prestigious
State Award
People Inc. has won a "Psychologically Healthy Workplace" Certificate of Merit from the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA). According to Dr. Rita Perlin, NYSPA president, People Inc. won the award for promoting a psychologically healthy workplace through its exemplary work-life balance program. “They use limited resources creatively and generously and are highly attuned to the needs of all their staff members,” said Dr. Perlin.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, it was a great honor to accept the NYSPA Award to People Inc. for a psychologically healthy workplace,” happily remarked People Inc. Board of Directors Chairperson Georgiana Jungels. “This state-wide award was given to only nine organizations in all of New York State this year and the exemplary concern and caring of the People Inc. staff for our consumers and our employees is recognized and it is greatly appreciated.”

Dr. Boles participates in roundtable discussion with Dr. McClellan, Director of CMS on new Medicare Drug Plan

On Wednesday, August 16, People Inc. President and CEO, Dr. James Boles participated in a roundtable discussion on the new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan that was held at the Amherst Senior Center on Audubon Parkway in Amherst. As the President of the largest health and human service agency in WNY, Dr. Boles was asked to participate by Dr. Mark McClellan, Director of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Congressmember Tom Reynolds. CMS is responsible for establishing and implementing changes to the Medicare Part D drug plan that kick in January 1, 2006. Seniors will start receiving information on the program in early fall.

McClellan met with leaders of the local human service and hospital communities before speaking and fielding questions from a larger audience of approximately 100 in the meeting room.

McClellan is on a bus tour throughout the northeast and Midwest promoting the new plan. Recently President Bush spoke to groups in Arizona and California about the new plan.

People Inc. unveiling 1960’s Invacar

On August 11, People Inc. exhibited its newest artifact from disability history, a 1960’s Invacar purchased by the agency. The Invacar is currently located at People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY History at 1291 North Forest in Williamsville. The Invacar Ltd (UK) was established in 1948 by Oscar Greeves for people in wheelchairs.

Assemblymember Mark J. F. Schroeder speaks to young adults attending People Inc.’s ECC YALT program

On Friday, July 29, Assemblymember Mark J.F. Schroeder spoke to People Inc. participants of the Erie Community College Young Adult Life Transitions program. Assemblymember Schroeder spoke to approximately 50 participants about his career path and why he became interested in becoming an elected official. He also discussed the importance of voting and answered the participants’ questions. Assemblymember Schroeder has a background in human services having worked for People Inc.’s Buffum Street group home in Buffalo in the late 1970’s.

The Young Adult Life Transitions is a community-based program providing individuals with developmental disabilities, ages 18 to 23, an opportunity to experience life on a college campus. Participants develop greater independence in the community, prepare for employment, and receive continued learning, as well as how to establish and maintain friendships. Programs are currently located at four local colleges: Buffalo State College, Canisius College, Daemen College, and Erie Community College South Campus. The program recently expanded to Niagara County Community College.
