People Inc. will use a HUD grant to help defray costs on two rental housing projects for elderly residents.

The nonprofit agency will receive two grants totaling $399,251 from the Section 202 Demonstration Pre-Development Planning grant program run by the Department of Housing & Urban Development.

The grants, for $200,000 and $199,251, will provide upfront funds to help speed up development of projects in Hamburg and Wheatfield, with construction expected to begin at both this spring. The Hamburg site is an expansion of an existing facility at South Park, while the Wheatfield is a new project on Townline Road.

Specifically, the funds will help defray startup costs and predevelopment plans, including architectural and engineering work, site control and other expenses.

People Inc. provides services to more than 10,000 people with special needs, their families and seniors throughout the Western New York region. The agency runs other senior housing facilities in West Seneca, Orchard Park, Amherst, Buffalo, Blasdell, Grand Island, Lackawanna and Cheektowaga.
