People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY cosponsors a unique film festival
People Inc.'s Museum of disABILITY History and the University at Buffalo School of Social Work have partnered to present a film festival devoted to issues facing people with disabilities. The Film Festival will take place Thursdays at 7 p.m. throughout October at the Dipson Market Arcade Film and Arts Center in Buffalo. The films in the series are intended to educate attendees and challenge stereotypes.

People Inc. partners with struggling Hispanics United of Buffalo (HUB)
Tracey Drury of Business First covers the newly developed relationship between People Inc. and HUB. People Inc. recently began working with HUB within the last few months to help resolve difficulties with programs funded by the State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD). The two human-services agencies are working together to preserve services for the West Side's largely Hispanic community, which relies heavily on HUB for programs and activities. People Inc. celebrates the opening of the Downing House
People Inc. celebrated the opening of its new Family Respite Center, the Downing House, on October 3. A presentation and ribbon cutting were held signifying the culmination to a year-long Capital Campaign for Respite Services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

For more than 30 years, People Inc. has helped families care for their loved ones who are developmentally disabled. One of the most important services is Respite, which provides temporary care when away from home. The Downing House will provide relief to hundreds of families who have a loved one with a developmental disability. Participants will benefit from enhancements in the new facility, including private rooms, recreation areas, and a kitchen spacious enough for wheelchairs. The Downing House is available to any individual over the age of ten with a developmental disability and services will be offered before and after school, along with emergency, overnight, planned, or weekend care.

South Buffalo residents out in full force in Albany
The Buffalo News recently reported on several South Buffalonians present at a function at the Governor’s Mansion. People Inc. Public Affairs Director Kevin Horrigan of South Buffalo recently attended a dinner at the Governor’s Mansion to accept an award on behalf of Congressmember Thomas Reynolds. People Inc. celebrates the opening of its eighth senior housing complex
On September 16, People Inc. held a ribbon cutting for its eighth Senior Housing Complex in Orchard Park, Carnation Housing. People Inc. Senior Housing tenants and staff, as well as community members were on hand to celebrate the opening of Carnation.

Assemblymember Mark J.F. Schroeder; Rosalinda Lamberty, director of multi-family housing, Housing and Urban Development (HUD); Rhonda Frederick, chief operating officer, People Inc.; and Ginny Rooney, People Inc. Senior Housing tenant, addressed the attendees.

People Inc.’s Carnation Senior Housing provides safe, affordable housing for low-income, senior citizens capable of independent living. The apartment complexes become a home that offers opportunities to make new friends and engage in group activities

People Inc. employee honored as a Black Achiever
Donna Mostiller, assistant director of human resources with People Inc., was recently honored as a Black Achiever by 1490 Enterprises. Donna is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management and the Buffalo Niagara Human Resource Association. She has served as co-chairwoman of the YWCA of Western New York Racial Justice Committee, as a member of the diversity committee of the Buffalo Niagara Human Resource Association and on the planning committee of Buffalo's annual Race and Reconciliation Conference.

People Inc. presents award to Congessmember Thomas Reynolds

On October 4, Congressmember Thomas Reynolds came to People Inc.’s administrative office located at 1219 North Forest to accept a Community Leader of the Year Award. People Inc. had nominated Congressmember Reynolds for this prestigious award from Governor George E. Pataki and the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. Reynolds (R-NY) has been a tireless advocate for people with developmental disabilities. As a leader in congress and as a member of the Western New York federal delegation, Representative Reynolds has worked closely with developmental disabilities agencies like People Inc.

On September 10, more than 1,100 guests attended the Seventh Annual Kaleida Ball, a black-tie event with a "New York, New York" theme that was held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. People Inc. Vice President Nadine Lewandowski was one of the attendees.

At the event Lewandowski had an opportunity to meet Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Senator Clinton and Congressman Thomas Reynolds were recipients of the second annual Spirit Awards presented to two key advocates of health care in Western New York. All proceeds from the event supported the Kaleida Stroke Center.

The Town of Amherst approves Museum’s use of the Mennonite Meeting House

People Inc. Initiates Family Welcome Series
Through an initiative of People Inc.’s Family Advisory Council, the agency has begun a new program to help welcome families and thank them for choosing People Inc. to provide services to their family member.

Family members will have an opportunity to meet management staff, learn about other services that may help their loved one now or in the future, and have a chance to ask questions. Additionally, families who have not yet decided on a provider for their loved ones are welcome to attend the informational sessions.

People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY History awarded two grants
The Museum of disABILITY History is pleased to announce that it has recently been awarded two grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, which will assist the Museum in advancing its development. The GET READY and GO! grants will enable the Museum of disABILITY History to further explore and tell the story of individuals with disabilities.
